榊原溫泉, Hot spring resort in Tsu, Japan
Sakakibara Onsen is a hot spring resort in Mie Prefecture fed by natural thermal waters from underground springs. The facility offers indoor baths, outdoor pools, private rental baths, and spacious relaxation areas where visitors can spend time after bathing.
During the Nara period, this spring served as a purification site for pilgrims traveling to the Ise Grand Shrine from the ancient capital. The site later gained literary recognition when mentioned in a classic 10th-century Japanese text.
The springs gained prominence in Japanese literature when Sei Shonagon mentioned them in The Pillow Book during the Heian period in the 10th century.
The water is naturally warm and the grounds are walked barefoot, so non-slip footwear can be helpful. Day visitors will find changing rooms, hand towel service, and shaded rest areas throughout the property.
The thermal water here has been nationally recognized for its skin-moisturizing properties among Japanese hot springs. Visitors often come specifically to experience these particular mineral-rich waters for their beneficial effects.
