Watanabe Family's Residence, Traditional kominka residence in Otaki, Japan

The Watanabe Family's Residence features thin cedar tiles called koba on its roof, secured by 15,000 rounded stones in traditional Japanese construction methods.

Built in 1849, this residence belonged to wealthy merchants who managed 700 hectares of rice fields and produced 9,000 straw bales annually.

The residence incorporates shoinzukuri architectural elements, with dedicated spaces for Buddhist altars, traditional drawing rooms, and merchant storage areas.

Located near Echigo-Shimoseki Station, the residence opens daily from 9:00 to 16:00, with entrance fees of 600 yen for adults and 250 yen for students.

The structure contains 230,000 koba tiles arranged in a pattern specific to buildings along the Sea of Japan, making it among the largest of its type.
