Kotohira Kadan, hotel in Kotohira, Japan
Kotohira Kadan is a traditional ryokan in a small town in Kagawa Prefecture. The main building contains about 40 guest rooms, with three traditional sukiya-style houses set among Japanese gardens.
The ryokan has a history spanning about 400 years and once hosted famous writers and poets such as Mori Ogai and Yosano Akiko. In 2019, new Japanese-Western style rooms were added to blend modern comfort with traditional character.
The name Kotohira comes from the mountain and sacred shrine that has drawn visitors for centuries. Guests experience this connection in the gardens, where seasonal changes create a sense of harmony with nature and the land's spiritual history.
The ryokan sits about 15 minutes walk from Kotohira Station and is easy to reach on foot. Rooms feature private baths or access to shared hot spring facilities where guests can soak in naturally alkaline thermal water after a day of exploring.
The ryokan has a special space called Enjukaku that honors famous literary figures who stayed here, offering visitors glimpses into Japan's literary heritage. This room connects the building's story to a deeper appreciation of the artistic traditions that shaped the region.
