Mannō Lake

Mannō Lake is an artificial reservoir in Japan designed to supply water to extensive farmland for rice production. It was constructed as an earth-filled dam that creates a large body of water within the regional landscape.

The first construction took place in the early 700s under a governor seeking to store water for the expanding population. It underwent major rebuilding efforts over the centuries to maintain its function and structure.

The lake's name reflects its deep connection to rice farming and the local way of life. Visitors can see how the water shapes the rhythm of agricultural seasons throughout the year.

The reservoir is best explored from several viewpoints around its perimeter that offer views across the water and surrounding farmland. Spring and autumn are ideal times to visit when the water level is high and pathways are easily accessible.

A portion of the lake functions as a wildlife sanctuary where numerous bird and animal species can be regularly observed throughout the seasons. This demonstrates how an engineered structure gradually transforms into an important habitat over time.
