相模大堰, Water management facility in Ebina and Atsugi, Japan
Sagami weir (相模大堰) is a water control structure that crosses the Sagami River between the cities of Ebina and Atsugi, in Kanagawa Prefecture. It has several gates and channels that regulate the flow of the river and direct water toward the surrounding communities.
The weir was completed in 1998 in response to water shortages affecting Kanagawa Prefecture. Since then, it has been supplying water to a large part of the region.
The weir hosts the annual Mizuki Festa, during which visitors can walk across the management bridge and look inside the control rooms. This event is one of the few chances to enter parts of the facility that are otherwise closed to the public.
Visiting during daylight hours gives the best view of the structure and the water channels. There are few visitor facilities on site, so it is worth coming prepared.
The structure includes fish passages designed with different water speeds, so that both small and large fish can move through. These passages are shaped to match the natural movement patterns of the fish species living in the Sagami River.
