Atsugi City Plaza, Combined facility in Naka-chō, Atsugi, Japan.
Atsugi City Plaza is a multi-purpose facility that brings together different functions in one building, using a central water garden and circular spaces to connect its various areas. The layout creates open zones that allow visitors to move freely between the library, administrative sections, and public spaces.
The facility was designed in 1984 by Yokogawa Architects & Engineers on the site of a former parking lot. This project marked the transformation of an unused area into a modern public space serving the community.
The plaza functions as a meeting place where locals gather for events and activities throughout the year. The library at its heart draws people seeking knowledge and connection with neighbors.
Outdoor toilets and washbasins are positioned throughout the facility for convenient access by visitors. Disaster prevention wells are integrated into the design, supporting public safety infrastructure.
The central water garden uses well water rather than municipal supply, allowing children to interact directly with a natural water source. This design choice reflects local environmental awareness and creates learning opportunities about water resources.
