Ebina, Industrial city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Ebina is a city in Kanagawa Prefecture between Sagamihara and Zama, through which several rivers flow. The built-up area spreads across flat land with industrial zones in the north and residential areas in the center and south.
The area hosted the provincial capital of Sagami during the Nara period with the provincial temple Sagami Kokubun-ji. The modern administrative unit formed through a merger of several villages and later received city status.
The city takes its name from an old term for lake and wild rice plants, referring to marshy ground. Farmers use the flat terrain today especially for protected strawberry fields whose fruits are harvested during the winter months.
The city sits conveniently between Tokyo and Yokohama with direct access via expressways and several railway lines. Visitors find shops and restaurants near the stations, while schools and residential neighborhoods spread across the whole area.
A film festival takes place every autumn and shows films by local and international directors in different cinemas. The screenings attract movie enthusiasts from the entire region who exchange views on new productions.
