Shinmei Tenso-jinja, Shinto shrine in Japan
Shinmei Tenso-jinja is a Shinto shrine in Suginami-ku dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess. The grounds span roughly 1,860 square meters (20,000 sq ft) of dense forest with tall ginkgo and oak trees that create a shaded, calm environment.
The shrine was founded at a place where the legendary prince Yamato Takeru is said to have rested during his eastward journey. A major renovation in fall 2009 preserved the site with new buildings constructed in traditional shrine style.
The shrine honors Yamato Takeru, a legendary prince whose eastward journey is venerated here. Visitors can observe traditional Shinto rituals such as coin offerings and hand clapping, which are part of daily spiritual practice at this site.
The shrine is a short walk from Asagaya Station, making it easy to reach on foot. Visit during cherry blossom season in spring or during special festivals when the grounds are decorated with traditional ornaments and local customs are on full display.
The shrine sells special Kanmusubi cotton bracelets and embroidered Goshuinfu seals that are redesigned for each visit. These handcrafted items connect visitors to the shrine and serve as personal keepsakes from their experience.
