Kisaichi-Maruyama Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Ayabe, Japan
Kisaichi-Maruyama Kofun is an ancient burial mound in Ayabe that rises from the surrounding landscape in a distinctive circular form. The structure spans approximately 70 meters across and stands about 10 meters tall, organized into three tiered levels built entirely from river stones.
The burial mound was created in the mid-fifth century but remained unknown until 1988 when it was discovered during construction work for the Kinki Expressway. Excavations at that time revealed artifacts that provided insights into the period and the person of high rank who was interred there.
The site reflects the craftsmanship of ancient builders who carefully layered stones to create a permanent monument for the deceased. Today, locals view it as an important connection to their regional past and historical identity.
The site sits about 2 kilometers from Takatsu Station on the JR West San'in Main Line, accessible by a pleasant walk through the area. The surrounding landscape helps you understand how the mound was positioned within its ancient setting.
Heavy rainfall in August 2014 caused structural damage to the northwestern section of the mound, creating a visible collapse on one side. This natural erosion remains visible today and reveals how weather continuously shapes even ancient monuments.
