空気神社, Modern shrine monument in Asahi Town, Japan
The Air Shrine is a modern monument in Asahi's mountain landscape featuring a 5-meter square platform of polished stainless steel at ground level. This reflective surface acts like a giant mirror, bouncing back images of the surrounding beech forest and sky above while an underground chamber lies beneath.
A local farmer conceived the shrine in 1975, and it was built in 1988 as part of the town's development efforts. The project combined traditional sacred site concepts with modern artistic expression from its beginning.
The shrine is named to honor air and nature's presence in this mountain setting. Visitors notice how the space expresses a connection between people and the surrounding environment when they enter the underground chamber with its torii gate.
To reach this location, visitors take the JR Sagae Line to Sagae Station and then board a mountain bus to Miyashuku. A taxi completes the journey, traveling through quiet mountain forests for roughly twenty minutes to arrive at the shrine.
The underground chamber was specially fitted with clay vessels designed to amplify footsteps, creating an unusual acoustic experience below ground. When visitors descend, the otherwise silent space becomes a place where even light movements echo and bounce off the chamber walls.
