Bihoro Pass, Mountain pass in Hokkaido, Japan

Bihoro Pass is a mountain pass in Hokkaido positioned at roughly 500 meters elevation between Bihoro and Teshikaga towns. From this vantage point, travelers can see across a vast volcanic landscape dominated by Lake Kussharo and the caldera that surrounds it.

The pass emerged as a key transportation route in eastern Hokkaido, connecting communities along Japan National Route 243. This road became the backbone linking coastal areas with inland regions and shaped how people and goods moved through the landscape.

The pass serves as a viewing point where seasonal changes become particularly visible and memorable. Mornings bring mist formations over the lake, while certain times of year attract migrating birds that travelers enjoy watching from above.

The best visiting season runs from July through October when public bus services operate and visibility tends to be clearest. A rental car from Memanbetsu Airport makes reaching the pass straightforward, though seasonal bus options work well if you prefer not to drive.

From the observatory platform, a small island becomes visible rising from the lake surface, drawing many visitors' attention. This island sits inside one of Japan's largest volcanic calderas, a reminder of the powerful geological forces that shaped the region.
