Kikuchi Castle, Ancient mountain fortress in Yamaga, Japan
The archaeological site spans 55 hectares and contains foundations of 72 structures, including octagonal towers, storehouses, barracks, and administrative buildings.
The castle construction started in the 660s after the Battle of Paekchon River, where Yamato forces experienced defeat against the Shilla kingdom and Tang China.
The architecture includes octagonal buildings similar to Korean designs, indicating the influence of Baekche refugee generals who supervised the castle construction.
The castle grounds feature multiple walking trails, a visitor center with artifact displays, and educational exhibits explaining the structural elements of the fortification.
Archaeologists discovered fossilized rice grains in a square storehouse, providing evidence of agricultural activities during the castle's operational period.
