Kikuchi Castle

Kikuchi Castle is an archaeological site of a mountain fortress in Yamaga containing foundations of 72 structures, including octagonal towers, storehouses, barracks, and administrative buildings. The remains reveal how a large fortification was laid out and organized across the terrain.

Construction began in the 660s following a defeat of Yamato forces in regional conflicts with Shilla and Chinese powers. This fortress was built as part of strengthening defensive positions during a period of military change.

Octagonal buildings at the site reflect influences from Baekche leaders who helped construct the fortress, showing how architectural styles traveled between regions. This design choice shaped how the settlement was laid out and organized.

The grounds feature multiple walking trails and a visitor center with artifact displays and educational exhibits explaining the structural elements. Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain involves walking across uneven ground and hillsides.

Archaeologists discovered fossilized rice grains preserved in a square storehouse, providing clues about farming activities during the fortress's operational period. These remains show the site served as a food storage and production center alongside its military role.
