Kirishima City Saigo Park, Public park in Kirishima City, Japan
Kirishima City Saigo Park is a public garden in Kirishima, Japan, centered around a large bronze statue of Saigo Takamori. The statue stands 10.5 meters tall on a 5-meter pedestal and weighs approximately 30 tons.
The park opened in 1988 to honor Saigo Takamori, a major figure of the Meiji Restoration who shaped Japan's modernization. Its creation grew from local efforts to preserve memories of this influential historical leader.
The entrance gate reproduces a traditional Satsuma clan villa, while inside you can see 53 woodblock prints showing scenes from the Satsuma Rebellion. These images help visitors understand local life and events from that era.
The park sits just a short walk from Kagoshima Airport, making it easy to visit when arriving or departing. Admission is free for everyone who wants to explore the grounds.
The bronze statue was originally made for Kyoto but sat in storage in Takaoka City for years. Local residents raised money to have it transported to Kirishima and installed here instead.
