Henjō-ji

Henjō-ji is a Buddhist temple in Sagano with several wooden buildings arranged within gardens designed using traditional Japanese landscaping principles. The structures feature wooden post-and-beam construction typical of temple architecture, with open verandas and carefully arranged plantings around them.

The temple was founded in 989 by Buddhist monk Kanjō and ranks among the earliest religious establishments in the Ukyō-ku area of Kyoto. This lengthy past has made it a significant spiritual center that shaped the district's development over many centuries.
