Sanbō-in Garden

Sanbō-in Garden is a Buddhist temple garden in Kyoto featuring a central pond, multiple bridges, and islands arranged around water features. The layout combines water surfaces with carefully positioned stones to create a balanced composition.

The garden originated in the early 1600s, but its present form developed from earlier work when a ruling authority reshaped it at the end of the 16th century for celebrations. Those foundational changes established the current garden's design principles.

The garden includes stones brought from different regions across Japan, each representing connections to historical territories. These selections reflect how the space honors regional diversity and past alliances through its design.
