Château de Sekijo, Medieval castle ruins in Mino, Japan

Château de Sekijo is a castle ruin in Mino featuring defensive stone walls, watchtowers, and terraced sub-baileys carved into the mountainside. The layout displays the typical layered structure of a medieval Japanese mountain fortress with multiple levels of defense.

The fortress was founded in 1528 by Nagai Nagahiro and served as a strategic stronghold. It fell in 1565 following a shift in alliances that turned against Oda Nobunaga.

The site preserves traditional Japanese fortification design integrated into the mountain rock face. Visitors can experience this building approach directly through the stonework and structures that remain visible.

The site is accessible via Nagaragawa Railroad with a short walk to the hiking trail from Seki Station. Comfortable hiking shoes are important since the climb is steep and trail conditions vary throughout the year.

The main bailey was transformed into a shrine and now sits within a wooded park. This conversion shows how sacred spaces in Japan have gained new meaning while historic structures remained in place.
