Ifuriyama, Mountain peak in Fukui Prefecture, Japan.
Ifuriyama is a mountain peak in Fukui Prefecture and the highest summit within Fukui City. Three hiking routes lead to the top, each passing through different terrain on the way up.
The summit has been considered a sacred place since ancient times, and Shinoza Shrine, dedicated to Okuninushi no Mikoto, stands at the top. A holy spring near the shrine has long been connected to the healing of eye troubles.
Every June, local residents carry torches up the mountain as part of a ritual that has been practiced for centuries. This procession connects the communities around the peak to the site in a way that is still felt during a visit today.
The mountain can be reached by three trails, with the shortest taking around four hours for a round trip. Sturdy footwear and enough water are worth bringing regardless of which route you choose.
The name of the mountain comes from a legend about the Buddhist monk Taicho, who is said to have seen rice falling from the sky while meditating at the top. This story sets the place apart from an ordinary hiking destination.
