高知県宿毛市愛媛県南宇和郡愛南町篠山小中学校組合立篠山小学校・中学校, Combined elementary and junior high school in Ainan, Japan
Shinoyama Elementary and Junior High School is a combined school in Ainan, Ehime Prefecture, run jointly by Sukumo City in Kochi Prefecture and Ainan Town in Ehime Prefecture. It brings together students from two different prefectures under one roof, covering both elementary and junior high levels in a single facility.
The school was founded in 1947, during Japan's postwar educational reform, when two neighboring communities decided to share their resources rather than build separate schools. That cross-border arrangement has remained in place ever since.
Students from two separate administrative regions learn side by side, creating a shared space where young people from different communities develop friendships and understanding. This daily mixing of students helps build connections across local boundaries.
The school sits in a remote mountain area near the border between Kochi and Ehime prefectures, so reaching it takes some planning. Students from both sides are typically transported by school bus along winding roads.
The school's official name is made up of 31 Japanese characters, which makes it one of the longest school names in the country. Every part of that name refers to a different administrative unit involved in running the school, which is why shortening it is so difficult.
