Museum of Life in the Shōwa Era

Museum of Life in the Shōwa Era, House museum in Minami-Kugahara, Japan.

The Museum of Life in the Shōwa Era occupies a two-story wooden building from 1951 and displays household objects and daily items from the post-war period. The rooms are arranged to show how a family carried out their everyday activities.

The Koizumi family residence was built in 1951 as a home and served the family for many years. It was converted to a museum at the end of the 20th century and later gained the status of a registered cultural property.

The living spaces blend Japanese traditions with Western influences, including furniture pieces that the original owner designed himself. This mix shows how households adapted their way of living after the war.

The museum is located near Shimo-Maruko Station and is accessible on foot. The exhibits are arranged in the rooms of the original house, so spaces can feel tight and climbing stairs is part of the visit.

The kitchen preserves a wooden refrigerator that was cooled by ice blocks alongside traditional cooking equipment. This combination shows the practical solutions families used before modern appliances.
