Sumida Hokusai Museum, Art museum in Kamezawa, Japan
The Sumida Hokusai Museum is an art museum in Kamezawa dedicated to the life and work of the artist Hokusai. Four floors display woodblock prints, paintings, and sketches through rotating and permanent exhibitions.
Hokusai lived nearly his entire life in the Sumida district and created many of his best-known works here during the Edo period. The museum opened in 2016 to preserve and present the artistic legacy of the neighborhood.
The permanent exhibition presents the evolution of Hokusai's artistic career, his connection to Sumida, and his influence on Japanese and international art.
The museum opens daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM and welcomes visitors in a modern building with accessible facilities. Audio guides and multilingual information help explore the collections.
The anodized aluminum facade reflects light in constantly shifting geometric patterns that vary with the time of day and weather. Architect Kazuyo Sejima designed the building as a shimmering volume that visually blends into its surroundings.
