Yuzawa Castle, Mountain castle ruins in Yuzawa, Japan.
Yuzawa Castle is a mountain castle ruin in Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture, Japan. What remains today are stone foundations and wall sections scattered across the hillside, giving a clear picture of how the fortification was laid out.
Onodera Michisada built the fortress in 1277 to guard the southern Ogachi district. It remained a key stronghold for the Onodera clan through the late 16th century, when conflicts between rival lords reshaped the region.
The castle sits on a hilltop overlooking the Yuzawa valley, which explains why this spot was chosen for defense. Visitors can still see how the stone foundations follow the natural shape of the hill, blending the structure into the landscape.
The ruins are reached by a marked trail from Yuzawa Station, and the walk takes around 15 minutes. The ground is uneven in places, so sturdy shoes are a good idea before heading up.
During the Mogami invasion of 1593, the castle held out for 10 days against a siege, and the attackers eventually withdrew without ever breaking through the walls. This makes it one of the few cases in the region where a defense succeeded through endurance alone.
