明治公園, Public park in Nemuro, Japan
Meiji Park is a public park in Nemuro featuring three large brick silos topped with distinctive iron helmet-shaped roofs that stand out prominently in the landscape. The space combines open green areas with these industrial structures as visual focal points.
The site was established in 1875 as a national government-operated livestock farm, making it one of the earliest agricultural facilities in Hokkaido. It later transformed into the park we see today and received recognition as a historical site in 2006.
The park received recognition as one of Japan's 100 Historical Parks in October 2006, highlighting its role in preserving local heritage.
The park has convenient parking for visitors and offers grilling facilities during the warmer months of the year. Take note that some facilities are only available during specific seasons when the weather permits.
The cherry trees planted here, including rare varieties, bloom quite late in the year compared to most of Japan. This late flowering window gives visitors a chance to see cherry blossoms in a region where they appear much later than elsewhere.
