Hida City Library, Municipal library in Furukawa, Hida, Japan
Hida City Library is a public library in Furukawa, in the city of Hida, Japan, located a short walk from Hida-Furukawa Station. The two-story building has reading areas, computer stations, and collections covering local history as well as general topics.
The library opened in 2009 and was built to serve as a central space for reading and learning in the Hida community. It became known to a much wider audience in 2016, when it appeared in an animated film that drew visitors from across Japan and beyond.
The library holds documents and books about the traditions and festivals of the Hida region, which visitors can browse on site. Those interested in local life will find materials here that are hard to come across anywhere else.
The library is within walking distance of Hida-Furukawa Station, so it fits naturally into a walk through the old town area. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building without any registration required.
The interior of the library was recreated for the anime film Your Name (2016), and many fans travel here specifically to recognize the scenes. The real building and the drawn version match quite closely, which surprises many first-time visitors.
