Hikōki no Oka, Airplane observation park in Iwayama, Japan
Hikōki no Oka is a park in Iwayama with three hills positioned less than 600 meters from Narita International Airport's runway. The location offers direct sightlines to aircraft during landing and takeoff operations.
The park opened to the public in March 2016 on land owned by Narita International Airport and leased to Shibayama Town. This arrangement created a public viewing space very close to one of Japan's major international airports.
The place serves as a gathering spot where aviation enthusiasts and families come to watch international flight operations up close. People visit to experience the reality of air traffic and share their interest in aircraft movements with others.
You can reach the park by car from the Matsuo-Yokoshiba or Narita interchanges, or take a 10-minute walk from the Aviation Museum bus stop. The entrance opens early in the morning and closes late in the evening, allowing observations at different times of day.
One of the hills has a heart-shaped ground pattern visible from above. During winter months, northern winds direct more aircraft to land over the park, while summer southern winds shift the flight paths so that departures are more often observed from the viewing areas.
