Chitoserō, Traditional ryokan in Tamanochō, Japan
Chitoserō is a traditional ryokan in the Tamanochō district with tatami-matted rooms, shared bathing areas, and spaces designed for experiencing Japanese hospitality. The building features private rooms of varying sizes and layouts, with all spaces crafted using traditional materials and techniques.
The ryokan opened its doors in 1928 during a period when Japan modernized while preserving traditional elements of hospitality services. This phase of development shaped the establishment's approach, which continues to balance heritage and contemporary needs.
Guests remove their shoes at the entrance, wear yukata robes during their stay, and follow Japanese dining customs while seated on tatami mats. These daily rituals create a direct connection between visitors and the traditional Japanese way of living.
Two daily meals are included in the overnight rate and served in private rooms, with check-in available after 15:00 and checkout before 10:00 the following morning. Visitors should wear comfortable clothes and expect to spend time indoors without shoes.
Each room has a dedicated tea preparation area where staff conduct ceremonies using local green tea varieties and traditional implements. This intimate tea experience allows guests to witness an art form usually reserved for dedicated tea houses.
