Tsukuriyama Kofun

Tsukuriyama Kofun is a burial ground with five distinct mounds featuring different shapes including keyhole, circular, and square forms standing together on a rise in Yosano. The mounds contain burial chambers where ancient people were laid to rest along with stone and metal objects.

The burial ground was first excavated in the 1920s and later reexamined in 1989, when archaeologists discovered burial chambers containing stone containers and metal goods. The site dates to the 3rd through 7th century and was designated a protected historic monument in 1930.

The burial mounds show how ancient people treated their deceased differently based on social rank and status. Walking around the site, you can see how the varied shapes and sizes reflect these social differences.

The site is laid out within a park setting where you can walk around the mounds and view them from different angles. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the structures from various vantage points and observe their details.

One of the mounds contained a wooden coffin shaped like a piece of bamboo and filled with many valuable objects inside. This unusual form shows how creative people were with their burial practices.
