Damine Kannon

Damine Kannon is a Buddhist temple in the Tamine valley built on cultivated grounds featuring traditional wooden structures and stone pathways. The complex combines religious spaces with open areas where Japan's architectural heritage meets the surrounding landscape.

The temple was founded in 1470 in connection with the construction of Tamine Castle during a period of regional consolidation. The merging of two Kannon statues marked a spiritual milestone for the community.

The temple remains closely tied to local artistic traditions that visitors can experience firsthand. Performances of Tamine Dengaku and traditional Kabuki take place regularly, showing how the community keeps these customs alive today.

The temple offers free parking and sits about two hours by car from Nagoya via expressway. Visit on non-performance days to explore the grounds and gardens without crowds.

A rare feature is the Kabuki stage dating to 1863 that continues to host annual performances today. The local community carries out these shows as a promise that has been kept for generations.
