Mount Horaiji

Mount Horaiji is a forested peak in Aichi Prefecture that rises about 695 meters, covered with dense cedar and cypress groves. The slopes contain natural rock formations, and a large temple complex sits at the summit.

The Horaiji temple was founded in 703, establishing this mountain as a major Buddhist center in the region. Its long history of religious activity eventually led to official recognition as a Place of Scenic Beauty.

The stone stairway connects pilgrims to the temple above, representing centuries of Buddhist devotion and practice at this sacred site. Local people regard this mountain as a spiritual destination where religious traditions continue to shape daily life.

It is best to arrive early in the day to avoid heat and have plenty of time for the climb. The mountain is particularly pleasant to visit in autumn when the weather is mild and favorable.

The mountain is home to an ancient cedar tree that is around 800 years old and locally celebrated for its size. This tree stands as one of the notable natural features that visitors can encounter while hiking.
