Shitara Town Okumikawa Local Material Museum, Local museum in Shitara, Japan.

The Shitara Town Okumikawa Local Material Museum is a small facility that displays regional objects and documents about the natural resources used in traditional crafts of the Okumikawa region. Inside you will find tools, handmade items, and written materials that show how nature and craft were connected in this area.

The collection was founded in 1977 and preserves knowledge about local materials and traditional techniques that shaped how the Okumikawa region developed. This work keeps the history of local crafts and the connection to natural resources alive for future generations.

The exhibition spaces show tools, crafts, and documents that reflect how local people have used and understood their surroundings. You can see which natural materials were important for everyday life and work in this region.

The museum is located within the Michinoeki Shitara facility and is generally open in the morning through early evening. It is closed on Tuesdays, and it also stays closed during the New Year period around late December through early January.

On the grounds of the facility stands a preserved wooden railway car from the old Toyohashi Railway Taguchi Line, which stopped running in 1968. This car offers a rare view into the transport history of the region and how it once connected to surrounding areas.
