東京新宿莫里哀劇場, Theater venue in Shinjuku district, Japan
Theater Molière is a theatre on the second floor of a commercial building in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, Japan. It has around 186 movable seats that can be arranged in different configurations, and its stage layout can change from one show to another.
The venue opened in 1986 under the name Cafe Teatro Moeiryu, serving as an open and informal space for arts events. Over time it took the name Theater Molière and went through several renovations to improve the stage and its technical setup.
Theater Molière is known in Shinjuku for hosting comedy and experimental shows performed by rotating companies and solo artists. It functions as a stepping stone for emerging performers looking to build an audience in Tokyo.
The theatre is about a two-minute walk from Shinjuku-sanchome Station and roughly five minutes from JR Shinjuku Station, so getting there on foot is straightforward. Checking the programme in advance is a good idea since shows change daily and some may sell out quickly.
The movable floor system was designed by owner Shizu Masuda specifically to reduce the distance between performers and the audience. This detail makes each show feel more direct than in a standard theatre hall.
