花座, Traditional yose theater venue in Aoba-ku, Japan.
The Hanaza is a yose theater in Aoba-ku, Sendai, dedicated to traditional Japanese stage arts. The stage is small and the seating area compact, so there is almost no distance between the performers and the audience.
The Hanaza opened in the 1990s, after Aoba-ku was established as a ward in 1989. It was created to provide a dedicated venue for traditional stage arts in this part of Sendai.
The Hanaza is one of the few places in the Tohoku region where you can watch rakugo storytelling and traditional comic acts performed live. A single performer sits on a cushion on stage and tells stories using only voice and gesture, with no scenery or props.
The theater is within walking distance of several stations on the Sendai Subway Nanboku Line. Since the venue is small, arriving early for a performance is a good idea, as seating fills up quickly.
The name Hanaza literally means "flower seat," a reference to the traditional term for the best seats in a Japanese theater. In the classic yose format, several performers take the stage one after another, so a single visit covers several different acts.
