Aer, Skyscraper in central Sendai, Japan.
AER is a 31-floor skyscraper rising 145.5 meters above Sendai Station, housing retail spaces, public facilities, offices, and an observation terrace. The building combines multiple functions under one roof and serves as an important landmark in the city center.
The building was completed in 1998, replacing original plans for a 21-floor hotel that were abandoned due to Japan's economic changes. The new structure marked a turning point in Sendai's urban development following the economic downturn.
The building functions as a gathering place for the local community, with multipurpose halls on the fifth and sixth floors hosting regular events and seminars. These spaces have become part of daily life in Sendai, used by various groups and organizations throughout the year.
The lower four floors house shops including a Maruzen bookstore and Starbucks, while floors 9 through 30 serve as office spaces for businesses. The observation terrace on the top floor offers free access to visitors and provides views across the city.
The building was constructed using the innovative Akatsuki-21 construction system, which was a technical innovation at the time of its development. This building method allowed for efficient and rapid completion of the project.
