カヤの平, Highland in Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Kaya-no-Hara is a highland in Nagano Prefecture at roughly 1500 meters elevation, characterized by natural beech forests and two distinct wetland zones. The landscape is shaped by dense woodland vegetation, with two separate marsh areas forming ecologically important zones across the terrain.
This highland originally served agricultural and pastoral functions before becoming a protected nature reserve in the early 20th century. The area was incorporated into Joshinetsu Kogen National Park, which granted it official protection status.
The beech forests have shaped the character of this highland for centuries and are recognized as a significant natural forest area in Japan. Local plant species in the wetlands reflect how this place has been valued for its ecological importance.
The area is best visited from June to October when road conditions are favorable and vegetation is at its fullest. National Route 403 and Shimizudaira Forest Road provide road access, making it straightforward to reach by car.
The North and South Dobu wetlands burst with color in summer when day lilies and Asian skunk cabbages bloom. This seasonal flowering display occurs in only a few other places in the surrounding region.
