Semba Building, Cultural property in Awajimachi, Japan.

The Semba Building is a commercial structure from the Taisho period in Osaka with characteristic brick walls and decorative aluminum panels. Inside, long passages connect over 600 shops that primarily sell textiles, fashion, and local food products.

The building was constructed in 1925 when Osaka was shifting its infrastructure from canal-based to road-based systems. This period of modernization led to the development of new commercial zones throughout the city.

The building stands in central Osaka and displays architecture from the Taisho period through its brick facades and decorative details. Visitors can see how this area was designed to function as a commercial district.

The structure is located near Honmachi Station on the Midosuji Line and accessible through several entrances. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the interior passages invite exploration.

At night, the decorative aluminum panels are illuminated by integrated display screens, creating a distinctive glow throughout the neighborhood. This lighting system shows how traditional structures can blend with contemporary technology.
