Gen'ei-bon Kokin Wakashū, Classical manuscript at Tokyo National Museum, Japan
The Gen'ei-bon Kokin Wakashū manuscript features meticulous calligraphy on traditional Japanese paper, measuring 21.1 centimeters by 15.5 centimeters in dimensions.
Created on August 19, 1120, during the Heian period, this version of the Kokin Wakashū anthology was crafted by calligrapher Fujiwara no Sadazane.
This manuscript represents the oldest surviving example of the Kokin Wakashū anthology, containing court poetry that influenced Japanese literary traditions for generations.
Visitors can find the manuscript, cataloged as B-2814, in the Tokyo National Museum collection, located at 13-9 Ueno Park in the Taitō district.
The Mitsui family donated this National Treasure to the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, which maintains its preservation through specialized conservation methods.
