Camp Page, Former US military base in Chuncheon, South Korea
Camp Page was a military installation spanning about 60 hectares of land in Chuncheon with standard military structures including administrative buildings, barracks, and a distinctive water tower. The site has deteriorated over time with some structures removed or heavily damaged, while the tower remains a recognizable landmark above the grounds.
The base was established in 1951 during the Korean War and named after a military officer killed in combat. It operated as a military installation until 2005, shaping the region for over five decades.
The site represents a period of cross-cultural connection for local residents who worked there or lived nearby. Generations of families maintained ties through decades of shared daily life on and around the grounds.
The site is located north of Seoul and access remains limited as the grounds are still being developed for public use. It is best to check current conditions beforehand and respect private areas, as the location holds personal meaning for many former residents and workers.
In 1983, a hijacked Chinese passenger aircraft landed on the grounds when occupants sought political asylum. This unexpected event briefly brought international attention to the base.
