Dong Phou Vieng National Protected Area

Dong Phou Vieng spans 1,970 square kilometers of land, featuring limestone hills, tropical forests, wetlands, and grasslands across varied elevations from 200 to 1,000 meters.

Established on July 7, 1995, with an initial area of 530 square kilometers, the protected zone expanded in 1998 to its current size to preserve natural resources.

The Katang ethnic group maintains traditional practices within the protected area, contributing to sustainable resource management and local ecological knowledge.

Visitors need permits to access the area, which lies 100 kilometers east of Savannakhet, and should arrange transportation and guides through authorized services.

Two herds of wild elephants inhabit the zone alongside leaf monkeys, gibbons, douc langurs, gaurs, giant muntjacs, dholes, jackals, tigers, pangolins, and king cobras.
