Cividade de Terroso

Cividade de Terroso is a hillfort on elevated terrain featuring ancient stone structures and defensive walls that show the original settlement layout. The excavated site contains multiple levels of dwelling structures that display different building phases and the development of the community.

The settlement originated between 900 and 800 BC as a Celtic castro city and remained inhabited through the Roman period. This long continuity shows how the place survived through different cultures and political systems.

The excavated artifacts reveal how people lived here through pottery, tools, and household items that show their daily activities. These objects help visitors understand what daily life looked like in this hillfort community.

The site is accessible from local roads near Póvoa de Varzim and located on a hillside that is relatively easy to navigate on foot. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the different levels of the settlement.

The hillfort contains an extensive water management system built in the 17th century with an aqueduct showing remarkable engineering skill. This structure dates from a much later period than the original Celtic settlement and shows how the site remained important over millennia.
