Târgu Secuiesc, city in Covasna County, Romania
Târgu Secuiesc is a small town in Covasna County in eastern Romania with a distinctive layout of streets spreading like sunbeams from a central square. Most houses in the center date from the 19th and early 20th centuries and are built of wood and brick with small windows and simple decorations.
The town was first mentioned in 1407 and grew into an important market place. During the 1848 revolution, it gained fame when master gunsmith Gábor Áron cast 64 cannons here to defend the region.
The town reflects the traditions of its Hungarian community, visible in how residents use public spaces and celebrate local festivals with traditional music and food. The narrow streets still show signs of the craft guilds that once organized work and family life together in the same buildings.
The narrow alleys and inner courtyard layout require patience when exploring, as most routes are best covered on foot. Simple local cafés and small shops near the main square offer refreshments and local souvenirs.
The name Torjavására, meaning market of Turia, reflects its long trading past and is often overlooked by casual visitors. The lesser-known network of more than 60 inner alleys connecting the courtyards creates a maze-like pattern that visitors can discover while wandering the streets.
