Ostrvica, Volcanic mountain in Rudnik, Serbia
Ostrvica is a volcanic mountain in Rudnik with two rounded peaks separated by a rift formed through ancient lava movements in central Serbia. The formation rises to about 758 meters and is visible from considerable distances due to its distinctive shape.
A fortress on Ostrvica was first documented in the 5th century and served as a strategic stronghold for Serbian rulers against Turkish incursions. The fortification remained significant until 1438, when it was eventually abandoned.
Medieval merchants from Dubrovnik established trading posts at the foot of Ostrvica, collecting duties on goods transported between the coast and Rudnik.
The volcanic rocks of Ostrvica are easily accessible and allow for walks to different points on the mountainside. The ascent requires basic hiking skills but is manageable for most visitors.
The rock formation contains remnants of fortified structures on both summits, telling of the mountain's defensive role. Visitors can find traces of ancient stonework integrated into the rock surface itself.
