House of Serbian-Norwegian friendship, Cultural center and museum in Gornji Milanovac, Serbia.
The House of Serbian-Norwegian Friendship is a cultural center and museum in Gornji Milanovac combining architectural features of a Viking ship with traditional Serbian log cabin design. The structure was built using Norwegian wood, with exhibition areas located in the attic and functional spaces distributed across multiple levels.
Constructed in 1987, the center commemorates the approximately 4,000 Yugoslav prisoners held in Norwegian Nazi concentration camps during World War II. It also honors local Norwegians who provided assistance that helped these prisoners survive.
The ground floor functions as a space for Serbian-Norwegian cultural meetings and conferences, hosting regular exchanges that strengthen ties between the two nations. This practical arrangement shapes how visitors experience the place as a living center for dialogue.
The center is located at the eastern approach from the Ibar Highway and operates as a museum with exhibition areas throughout the building including the upper floors. Allow time to explore both the historical displays and the functional spaces used for events and gatherings.
The building materials were processed in Norway and shipped to Serbia as prefabricated components, then assembled on site. This transnational construction process itself became a symbol of the partnership between the two countries.
