Borač Fortress, Medieval fortress in Borač, Serbia.
Borač Fortress is a medieval fortification perched on a rocky hilltop in Serbia at 333 meters elevation. The remains include fragments of walls, watchtowers, and assorted stone structures scattered across the hillside.
The fortress first appears in written records during 1389 when it came under control of Princess Milica following the death of Prince Lazar at the Battle of Kosovo. It served as part of the medieval Serbian defensive network during this tumultuous period.
The chapel dedicated to Saint Archangel Michael below the fortress reflects medieval Serbian spiritual life and continues to serve as a gathering place for the local community.
Visiting the fortress requires a short hike from the village of Borač along marked trails leading up to the hilltop. The terrain is uneven, so sturdy footwear and some time to explore the scattered remains are recommended.
The fortress sits atop Borački krš, an ancient volcanic formation that rose from the earth roughly 20 million years ago. This geological foundation connects the site to a far deeper history than the medieval stones that crown the hilltop.
