Permafrost Museum

The Permafrost Museum extends 14 meters below ground through interconnected tunnels maintaining constant temperatures between minus 4 and minus 6 degrees Celsius year-round.

Established in 1965 from a 1936 research laboratory, the museum contains artifacts related to the abandoned Salekhard-Igarka railway project following Stalin's death in 1953.

The museum exhibits demonstrate how local populations adapted their lifestyles to extreme weather conditions through scientific research and traditional knowledge.

Visitors receive thermal protective gear including silver coats and wool boots before entering the underground chambers where temperatures remain consistently below freezing.

The facility houses time capsules from 1950 containing World War II newspapers, alongside preserved specimens of 49,000-year-old bird cherries and ancient larch tree trunks.
