Museum of the History of GAZ, Automotive museum in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

The Museum of the History of GAZ is an automotive museum in Nizhny Novgorod that documents the evolution of one of the Soviet Union's major automobile plants. The exhibition displays vehicles from different production periods alongside technical drawings, photographs, and factory records covering more than 90 years of operations.

The GAZ factory opened in 1932 and soon became the Soviet Union's largest automobile manufacturer. During World War II, production shifted to military vehicles and engines, then returned to civilian models once the war ended.

The GAZ factory remains a central part of Nizhny Novgorod's identity, and the museum makes that connection visible to visitors. Walking through the exhibition, you can see how closely the lives of local people were tied to the factory floor.

The museum sits on Lenin Avenue in central Nizhny Novgorod and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. It is worth checking in advance which parts of the exhibition are currently open, as some areas may be temporarily closed.

Some of the vehicles on display were built specifically for extreme Soviet conditions, including models made to handle arctic temperatures and remote terrain. These engineering choices set them apart from Western cars of the same era in ways that are easy to spot up close.
