20 inch cast-iron naval cannon, Artillery gun at Museum of History of Motovilikha Plants, Perm, Russia
The 20-inch cast-iron naval cannon is a large gun from the 19th century on outdoor display at the Museum of History of Motovilikha Plants in Perm. The barrel rests openly on the museum grounds and can be viewed from all sides.
The cannon was cast in 1869 at the Motovilikha plants and was originally meant to arm the Russian cruiser Minin. It never made it onto the ship and eventually became a display piece on land.
The cannon stands on the museum grounds as a physical reminder of the Ural region's role in arming the Russian Imperial Navy. Visitors can walk right up to it and get a close look at the scale and finish of the cast iron.
The cannon sits outside on the museum grounds and is easy to spot on arrival. Visiting during daylight hours gives the best view of the iron surface and the details of the barrel.
The design of this gun was based on the American Dahlgren gun, which has a curved profile that spreads pressure more evenly along the barrel than older designs. That feature made such guns safer to fire.
