Lenskiye Shchyoki

Lenskiye Shchyoki is a limestone canyon carved by the Lena River, where the walls rise about 201 meters above the water. The rock formations stretch for several kilometers, composed of layered stone of different types and ages.

These rock formations took shape hundreds of millions of years ago during the Cambrian period, when this area lay beneath ancient seas. The layered stone walls preserve traces of early life and record a long span of Earth's geological changes.

Local indigenous peoples gave this place a name reflecting its distinctive steep rock faces. The canyon holds cultural significance as a place where Siberian communities have long gathered and traveled along the river.
