Pik BAM, Mountain summit in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia

Pik BAM is a mountain summit in the Kodar range that rises to 3072 meters with steep granite cliffs and jagged ridges. Glacial erosion has carved the rock into sharp formations, creating the complex relief that characterizes this peak.

The first successful ascent took place in 1963 when mountaineers from Chita reached the summit, marking an early milestone in exploring this remote region. This achievement demonstrated the climbing capabilities and determination of Soviet mountaineers during the Cold War era.

The mountain takes its name from the Baikal-Amur Mainline railway, an ambitious project that opened up this remote region for exploration and development. The naming reflects how major infrastructure projects shaped the way locals and visitors understand and engage with the surrounding landscape.

The best climbing season is June through August, when weather conditions are most favorable, though conditions can shift rapidly throughout the day. An experienced guide is essential, as the technical routes demand solid climbing skills and specialized equipment for safe passage.

The peak offers multiple climbing routes ranging from moderate to highly technical levels, attracting climbers with varying degrees of experience. Its prominent rise of about 2230 meters from base to summit makes it a notable objective for mountaineers seeking substantial alpine challenges.
