Ust-Borovaya Saltworks, Salt production museum in Solikamsk, Russia.
The Ust-Borovaya Saltworks is a wooden industrial complex with multiple towers and processing buildings situated along the riverbank in Solikamsk. The facility includes deep shafts for solution extraction, storage reservoirs, and treatment structures built in the late 1800s.
Merchant Alexander Ryazantsev founded this operation in 1882 when the city's traditional wells became insufficient for salt production. The facility continued working with its original methods for many decades, documenting an important period of Russian salt extraction.
The site reveals how salt workers lived and what their daily labor involved in extracting this essential mineral. The preserved equipment and structures show the skills and techniques that were passed down through generations of salt producers.
The wooden structures are best visited during dry weather, as rain can make the pathways around the towers slippery. Wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to explore the different areas of the complex.
The saltworks used the same evaporation techniques from over 100 years earlier right up until 1972. This makes it one of the last surviving examples of historical salt extraction methods still standing in Russia.
