First Apartment house of Lensovet
First Apartment house of Lensovet, Federal cultural heritage building on Karpovka Embankment, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The First Apartment house of Lensovet sits on the Karpovka River bank, connecting two wings that house 76 residential units in total. The structure includes communal facilities such as a kindergarten, laundry, shops, and staff accommodation.
Architects Evgeny Levinson and Ilya Fomin built this residential complex between 1931 and 1934 for members of the Leningrad Soviet administration. The project emerged during a period when new housing concepts for urban officials were being developed.
The building displays functional design through built-in furnishings, open galleries, and stone ornaments that shape its appearance. Visitors can still see the original decorative details and fountains that reflected the daily life of its residents.
The building sits at 13 Karpovka Embankment and is easy to locate along the river bank street. Visitors should note that this is a protected cultural site and access may be limited.
The apartments feature innovative two-story layouts with oak staircases, an unusual design choice for residential buildings of that era. A solarium on the roof provided residents with a recreational space for rest and leisure.
