Benois House, Federal cultural heritage building at Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt, Saint Petersburg, Russia
Benois House is a residential building in Saint Petersburg, Russia, that occupies a full block along three streets with a central hexagonal dome and decorative vases crowning its main facade. The structure contains 250 apartments distributed through 25 separate entrances, offering residents a grand layout.
The First Russian Insurance Company commissioned this residential complex in 1910, with construction completed two years later in 1912. The project arose during a period of major urban growth, when the city needed modern apartment buildings for its expanding population.
The structure takes its name from the Benois family, who produced several generations of notable architects in the city. Julius, Leontiy and Albert Benois worked together on this neoclassical design, reflecting their family tradition of architectural practice.
The building was equipped with advanced facilities for its time, including steam heating, electric elevators and a telephone station. Visitors can view its exterior architecture from Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt and the adjoining streets.
During the Leningrad siege, the wing facing Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street housed one of the few kindergartens that stayed open. This facility continued caring for young children through one of the most difficult periods in the city's history.
